Changes to ISO18001 to ISO 45001

OHSAS 18001 changing to ISO 45001, Development of the International Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard

BS OHSAS 18001 is due to be replaced by a new international standard, ISO 45001 in late 2016. An ISO project committee comprised of 83 delegates representing 27 member bodies (including the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has been formed to produce the new standard which met for the first time in October 2013 and has produced the first working draft of ISO 45001. The projected timeline for development and introduction of the new standard is as follows:

The new ISO Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system standard and supporting documentation will not be allocated the ISO 18000 series as that number had previously been allocated to a series of ‘radio frequency for item management’ standards.

The proposed differences between the existing OHSAS 18001 and new ISO 45001 standards, together with the rationale for the changes.
